Athlete Profile: Scott Turner
Leading on and off the field

Scott Turner - community leader, motivational speaker, and NFL defensive back for nine seasons - has always been known for his character, passion, and his dedication to service. On December 27th, 2005 Scott announced his candidacy to represent the 50th District of California in Congress. Scott advises other professional athletes to be grateful for the years they do play and look forward for what is to come in their post-playing days by planning on what they want to do BEFORE retirement.

Leading on the field
Often considered too small as a football player to make it on the Division I or professional level, Scott nevertheless persevered. He secured a scholarship to the University of Illinois, where he played football, achieved a degree in speech communications, and most of all, met Robin, his wife of nearly 10 years. Scott has also nearly completed his Masters in Educational Policy Studies.

In all of his stops, Scott's leadership on and off the field was always evident. For six consecutive years, his teammates elected him as the team's player representative to the NFL Players Association. Scott's communication and negotiation skills were an incredible asset as he investigated player issues and participated in decision-making at annual meetings.

Scott became involved with the national political process when he secured a position as an intern in California and Washington with Congressman Duncan Hunter, chairman of the House Armed Services Committee. Scott had the opportunity to travel extensively around San Diego and Washington with Congressman Hunter, and came to truly understand the role of a Congressman, and the specific needs of the San Diego area. Among his many experiences, he spoke often to constituents, worked on a child safety project, and met with foreign dignitaries. Scott has continued to work with Congressman Hunter and his staff since that time, and recently helped Congressman Hunter organize a search and rescue mission to New Orleans in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.

Preemptive approach to retirement
Scott started preparing for his post-athletic career in 2000, but was able to take those plans a few steps further during the 2002 season when he was not picked up. ãI knew I had done everything in my power to prepare to play in 2002, however it did not happen. I did not let myself get discouraged and took no pity on myself. I knew that God wanted me to take the season to better my life. I wanted to have a plan and purpose to prepare for my post-athletic career.ä

The transition for many players from professional athletics to the business world is often a trying one. Understanding some of the intricacies of the professional world before diving in helps to make a smoother transition. In the world of business, many of the same skills and traits necessary for succeeding in professional sports apply. These skills will be conveyed to your potential associates and customers either via your resume, your collateral and materials or via word of mouth.

Scott believes this transition has been easy for him since he is lived in both the world of business and sports worlds simultaneously. By doing so, he was able to establish roots in the business world. He adds, ãWhat you learn in athletics you can also apply off the field: discipline, diligence, doing everything in excellence and with integrity. You learn patience and long suffering ö not everything will go your way when you want it to ö that applies in all aspects of your life. The characteristics you develop and the relationships you establish help your drive for success. Learning these skills will allow one to stay ahead of the game, whatever stage they are in.ä

Personal successes
Scottâs success in professional athletics is obvious, but he places great emphasis on the success of his relationship with his wife and with God.

Scott also serves as an accomplished motivational speaker, and a dedicated community leader. Drawing on his successful NFL career, and his natural dynamic speaking ability, Scott often shares his inspiring message about the importance of education and goal attainment with groups of all kinds, including the Boys and Girls Clubs of San Diego, and many other charitable organizations. Speaking recently at the California State Games to a group of over 20,000 coaches, athletes and parents, Scott described how education and a clear plan to achieve his goals helped him to succeed.
